The Heartbreakers Anniversary

Happy 1 Year Anniversary!

Heartbreakers is a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate regional sized event held every month at Nexus. Players travel from all over Texas to attend for cash prizing. There are side events branching into other FGCs and its a great place to get to know the community! It's amazing to see players still get out and travel and play in person and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere as Heartbreakers at Nexus has slowly become one of the largest regionals around! The origins of Heartbreakers 💔: For those who remember, Nexus had a Smash weekly called "Heart of Smash" that grew to over 100 events. We wanted to bring the atmosphere and vibe back, but in a post-covid era at the new Nexus location. It started pretty grim, only getting around 8 people. Then our new Tournament Organizer, Aaron, stepped in. We made a bunch of changes, including changing it to monthly, providing a better overall experience, and rebranding it to Heartbreakers. We could keep the "Heart of Texas" theme, but create something for the new era. Eventually, we got more and more people to join us, including Spin, other TOs, and after growing the prize pool over and over we were able to establish some of the highest PR players. We kept scaling production up until it was inevitable that we would have to make this the caliber of event we wanted. Now, here we are, one year in! I couldn't be more pumped about the direction it is going in!

🥇 MuteAce's Peach was able to take down the tournament, with 🥈 SkinnythePooh's Mario at 2nd. About MuteAce: MuteAce is a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Peach main from South Florida who is currently residing in San Antonio, Texas. He is considered the best Peach main in the world since the post-pandemic metagame. He is the second Peach player to win a major in Ultimate and he was ranked on the San Antonio Ultimate Power Rankings, 2nd on the Texas Ultimate Power Rankings MuteAce has been a regular at Heartbreakers, so I just wanted to thank you for making the trip down to Waco again. You're game play is something special to watch.

We have to acknowledge the greatness that was SkinnythePooh on Mario! Coming back from losers bracket and being one of the most talented and aggressive Mario's I have ever seen. Be sure to check out some of his vods in the links below. The amount of talent in the tournament was very obvious, and if you were able to crack the top 8, that is a legitimate accomplishment.

SHOUT OUTS

Special thanks to Waltz and Fatal Slug for casting the main parts of the event. Also thank you to Inlajin, Squaffles, TyboTexas, Emmanuel for all the help you have done casting as well. Especially in previous Heartbreakers. The casters are the glue that holds everything together and I know each of them plays a big part in growing the community. Speaking of growing the community, this event wouldn't have been possible without Aaron Santos aka Beaned. Special shout-out to you, Aaron! You are in fact, "really good at your job," and it's been fun growing the Smash community with you. Hopefully, we are just getting started! I also wanted to shout-out Spin who has been a huge pillar of the Smash community and I have gotten to work with more recently. He is one of the best in this industry and has only taken this tournament to higher levels! For any other admins or TOs, I am looking forward to working with you and getting to know y'all. It hasn't gone unnoticed the work you've put in and I am grateful.

I also wanted to give a shout-out to Tristan and Danny, for sticking with Nexus for so long. While we have a mostly new staff, Tristan and Danny have stayed die hard Nexus loyals, even when it didn't make sense to do so. I don't know what Nexus would do without them. It's amazing to have some Nexus vets to lean on while we grow. To everyone on the TCG side, the hosts, and the dining staff you all did a great job with these 100+ people events. Also, thank you Jacob for joining the production staff and Jamal for jumping in as well with the new media additions. Any Nexus staff, thank you for putting up with all the chaos! I know you guys believe in the goal and growth at Nexus or you wouldn't be here! For anyone who didn't get a shout out! Stick with us for over a year and I guarantee you will get one! EVENT RECAP

We had a ton of side events ranging from Smash Doubles, Redemption Bracket, to Rivals of Aether II, Marvel Tokon, and Smash Melee! The Melee was super fun bringing out the big CRT TVs and seeing all the old-head Smash players back at it. It's truly a great community and there is nothing like it.
